At least half of the oxygen produced on Earth comes from the ocean, mostly from tiny photosynthesizing plankton. But marine life also uses roughly the same amount of oxygen to breathe, for cellular respiration, and in the decomposition process.
They deliver excess nutrients to coastal waters, causing an overgrowth of algae with dramatic consequences for marine biodiversity. Moreover, as algae decompose, they consume oxygen, creating dead zones of low oxygen levels in coastal waters. The importance of monitoring the ocean’s oxygen reservoir cannot be overstated.
