If you want to prune out old, well-established canes, do so in late June after the first big floral display, not in late April. Otherwise, you’ll reduce the glory of the first bloom cycle. Climbing roses need a couple of years to mature before doing too much pruning. Early spring pruning should be limited to removing winter damage and dead canes, then reducing side/lateral shoots to 3 to 6 inches to increase flower production.

In our gardens, we usually prune them in late winter, before new growth begins to emerge in spring. Reason being, it's much easier to prune a rose when there's no foliage on the plant.
