During the Late Bronze Age, Troy was called Wilusa and was a vassal of the Hittite Empire. The final layers (Troy VIII-IX) were Greek and Roman cities which in their days served as tourist attractions and religious centers because of their link to mythic tradition.
There is no mention of Troy, Ilios or Wilusa in the Bible. Troy had ceased to exist as a significant city not long after the Israelites migrated to Canaan. There may have been a minor settlement there through Bible times up until the middle ages.

No-one knew of the Mycenaean civilisation, whether Troy was a real place nor where it was located.
