This Code of Practice relates to the labelling and marketing of high caffeine beverages as defined by EU Regulation 1169/2011. Energy Drinks are functional beverages with a stimulating effect and unique combinations of characterising ingredients including caffeine, taurine, vitamins and other substances with a nutrition or physiological effect.
EDE’s Code of Practice provides a clear set of principles in relation to the composition, marketing and promotion of energy drinks: It confirms the safety of energy drinks and their ingredients. It defines clear principles for the labelling of energy drinks.
Regulatory authorities have reviewed these ingredients for energy drinks and concluded the following levels to be generally safe: taurine 4000 mg/l iv, glucuronolactone 2400 mg/l iv and caffeine 320 mg/l iv, x. ICBA members should use the above levels as a guidance.
