The midbrain (Latin: mesencephalon), also called the mesencephalon, is the uppermost part of the brainstem. The name mesencephalon comes from the Greek word mesos, meaning "middle," and enkephalos, meaning "brain". The midbrain is located beneath the thalamus and above the pons in the posterior cranial fossa.
The midbrain or mesencephalon is the rostral -most portion of the brainstem [ 2 ] connecting the diencephalon and cerebrum with the pons. [ 3 ] . It consists of the cerebral peduncles, tegmentum, and tectum. It is functionally associated with vision, hearing, motor control, sleep and wakefulness, arousal (alertness), and temperature regulation.
The midbrain is the topmost part of the brainstem, the connection central between the brain and the spinal cord. There are three main parts of the midbrain - the colliculi, the tegmentum, and the cerebral peduncles.
