Blaine House-Governor’s Mansion. The Blaine House is the home of Maine’s Governors and their families, and is also a public building. Guided tours of the Blaine House are available for free, but must be scheduled in advance. There are no walk-in visits.
Plan Your Visit. The State House is open to the public year round, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Group tours may be arranged through the Maine State Museum. Guided tours run hourly between 9:00 a.m. and noon. Walk-in visitors are always welcome!
The first capital of Maine was Portland, but it moved to Augusta because of its more central location. The Legislature passed and Governor Samuel E. Smith signed the bill establishing Augusta as the capital in 1832.
Tours of the State House. As a citizen or visitor to the State of Maine, you are invited to visit and/or tour the Maine State House. Tours and Field Trips are scheduled through the Maine State Museum. They are free of charge, and available for the State House and the Blaine House.

The capital of Maine hasn’t always been Augusta. Portland originally held that title. But Portland’s location on a large, vital harbor made that city exposed to attacks by sea. Officials also thought that a more central location would better serve the large new state. Several towns petitioned to be the capital.
