Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome) is an inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue around your tibia. Pain typically occurs along the inner border of the tibia, where muscles attach to the bone. Shin splint pain most often occurs on the inside edge of your tibia (shinbone).
Shin splints is the common name for the medical condition called medial tibial stress syndrome, in which pain occurs along the tibia. This pain is the result of small tears and inflammation in the muscles, tendons and bone tissue around your shin.

The pain of shin splints is characteristically located on the outer edge of the mid-region of the leg next to the shinbone (tibia). An area of discomfort measuring 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) in length is frequently present.
Shin splints cause pain on the front or outside of the shins or on the inside of the lower leg above the ankle. Treatment includes stopping the activity that causes pain. Stretching and strengthening exercises may also help.
