An RDW (red blood cell distribution width) blood test measures how varied your red blood cells are in size and volume. Your red blood cells carry oxygen from your lungs to organs and tissues throughout your body. The oxygen fuels your body’s cells so that they can produce energy.

It is a part of a complete blood count, which also measures your hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red and white blood cell counts [2, 3].
RDW results help your provider understand how much your red blood cells vary in size and volume. Results are usually shown as a percentage and compared to a reference range, which may vary depending on the lab used. A normal RDW result means your red blood cells are within the reference range.

Calculations. The "width" in RDW is sometimes thought to be "misleading", since it in fact is a measure of deviation of the volume of RBCs, and not directly the diameter. RDW-CV "width" refers to the width of the volume curve (distribution width), not the width of the cells. [5][6]
