Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 3 in D major, Op. 29, was written in 1875. He began it at Vladimir Shilovsky's estate at Ussovo on 5 June and finished on 1 August at Verbovka.
The third, a lyrical movement headed simply Nicht schnell (“Not fast”) sounds very idiosyncratically Schumann, rather than fitting the outlines of a traditional slow movement of a symphony. Clarinets and bassoons announce the main theme against viola accompaniment and pizzicati strings.

By April 1893, Tchaikovsky had also decided to rescore the E-flat Symphony as a piano concerto, his third. In June he did preliminary work on this project, while simultaneously pushing ahead with work on the 6th Symphony.
