26 lip 2011 · The current WHO definition of health, formulated in 1948, describes health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” 1 At that time this formulation was groundbreaking because of its breadth and ambition.

Subsequently, we will explore the relation between a health or disease definition, its practical function, and the context it is deployed in—and discuss how this could be relevant in further research aimed at formulating context-specific definitions.
