What Does FACOG Mean? Certification recognizes that a doctor has graduated from a recognized medical school, completed an accredited residency program, has an unrestricted license to practice medicine, and has passed extensive exams given by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
“FACOG” stands for “Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.” In order to earn this distinction, a physician must first earn Board-certification and then meet additional criteria that demonstrate the doctor keeps abreast of the latest medical guidelines, treatments, and techniques in women’s health care.
Ob-gyns who are members of ACOG are called Fellows or Junior Fellows. ACOG Fellows are ob-gyns who are board certified in obstetrics, gynecology, or both. They are identified by the initials FACOG after their name. ACOG Junior Fellows are ob-gyn residents or recent graduates of an approved residency program and not yet board certified.
