The endocardium (pl.: endocardia) is the innermost layer of tissue that lines the chambers of the heart. Its cells are embryologically and biologically similar to the endothelial cells that line blood vessels .

The endocardium has three components: a single layer of flat endothelial cells in direct contact with the blood-filled chamber, a dense inner connective tissue layer, and a loose outer connective tissue layer (Fig. 10.11). The last two layers are sometimes lumped together and referred to as the subendocardium.
