Dysplasia. The gland cells in Barrett’s esophagus can become more abnormal over time. This is called dysplasia. Dysplasia is a pre-cancer. Although the cells are abnormal, they do not have the ability to spread to other parts of the body. This condition can be treated.

Any degree of dysplasia in Barrett's esophagus is a risk factor for developing esophageal cancer (adenocarcinoma). However, high-grade dysplasia has an increased risk of progression to cancer compared to low-grade dysplasia. Pathologists can diagnose and grade dysplasia by looking at esophageal biopsies under the microscope.

Dysplasia. Barrett's oesophagus is not cancer. But over time, cell changes may mean they start to grow more abnormally. This is called dysplasia. Dysplasia can be either: low grade – this means the cells are slightly abnormal; high grade – this means the cells are more abnormal.
The earliest stage esophageal cancers are called stage 0 (high grade dysplasia). It then ranges from stage I (1) through IV (4). As a rule, the lower the number, the less the cancer has spread. A higher number, such as stage IV, means cancer has spread more. And within a stage, an earlier letter means a lower stage.
