28 maj 2019 · Today, the blues scale is familiar to most people who have studied music formally. Although there has been since 1967 a broad consensus as to what that scale is, for the first half of the twentieth century there was actually a good deal of disagreement on that point.
The best one can hope to do in a short introduction is to provide a selective overview of how blues and our understanding of blues have evolved, and to provide some guideposts for further exploration— while always remembering that there are other, equally valid ways to cover the same territory.
Since the 1960s, both the blues and the jazz traditions have been mined for rock fusions, and artists such as Carlos Santana and, more recently, various groups on the “jam band” scene have brought blues, jazz, and rock together in ways that at their best illuminate all three styles.
