Art songs have been composed in many languages, and are known by several names. The German tradition of art song composition is perhaps the most prominent one; it is known as Lieder. In France, the term mélodie distinguishes art songs from other French vocal pieces referred to as chansons.

The rhapsodic songs of George Butterworth and Ivor Gurney helped singers give voice to the trauma surrounding the First World War.
Lieder and art song. The idea of Lieder soon became adopted by other nations who adapted it to their different national styles and tastes. Composers like Fauré, Debussy and Poulenc are among the great French mélodie (French art song) composers, setting Hugo, Baudelaire, Verlaine and Apollinaire instead of Goethe, Heine, Eichendorff and Mörike.
One of Clara’s greatest songs is perhaps her setting of Heine’s Lorelei, a tale of the spirit named Lorelei, who lures men to their deaths with her haunting singing. There are a total of thirty-seven musical settings of the poem, but Clara makes it her own.
What is French art song? French art song emerged in the 19th century and was largely considered the French equivalent of the German Lied. In time, though, it had established its own artistic framework and style, with the popular lyric poetry of the day – itself bound up in heady Romantic ideals and symbolism – forming the heart of new works.
