Ability power, or AP, is one of the two main offensive stats that binds champions to certain item builds, and the counterpart to attack damage. Unlike attack damage, ability power does not have a tangible, baseline effect.
AP = Attack Potency, i.e. how much damage does your attack do to your opponent. Higher your AP, the more damage you would do to your opponent. Example: Current Luffy has much higher AP than current Chopper, since Luffy's attacks would do much more damage than Chopper's.

In contrast, Ability Power or AP can effectively increase the strength of your abilities, items, and runes. Both can affect your character’s abilities and characteristics depending on the Champion you pick.
It builds into either Manamune (for AD) or Archangel’s Staff (for AP), which are both items that scale in power according to the amount of mana you have. The better you’re able to spend your mana and build your pool, the more powerful these items become.
