I decided to conduct research using some of these ideas in two similar first grade classrooms. The control group studied math in the traditional workbook-based manner. The other class used the lesson plans I developed. The children used that special number naming for three months. They also used a special abacus I designed, based on fives and tens.
The guide first outlines important elements to be considered when developing a lesson, including moving from telling to explaining to guiding; effectively situating a lesson within a unit; pacing the development of conceptual understanding; identifying key questions; and incorporating assessment.
