This paper identifies how the classical conception of security centred on the state, the military and external threats was broadened by different approaches to include other actors (individuals, groups, societies, civilizations), other sectors (economic, political, social, environmental) and internal threats.
But for the purpose of this paper, five basic types of conflicts namely intra-personal conflict, inter-personal conflict, intra-group conflict, inter-group conflict and international conflict are identified and briefly discussed.
Conflicts are a part of everyday life – they form in our close relations, at a societal level and on an international level. All too often we see conflicts leading to aggression, hostility and war. But conflicts can also be a steppingstone leading to change and wisdom; if we learn to handle them constructively.
Conflict is defined as an incompatibility of goals or values between two or more parties in a relationship, combined with attempts to control each other and antagonistic feelings toward each. other (Fisher, 1990). The incompatibility or difference may exist in reality or may only be perceived by the parties involved.
