It does have a place in competitive games. Like you do get more lp when you get higher place in tft. Or it could exist in a free-for-all type game. But having it in a teambased game makes no sense since it makes teams less efficient because the ideal way kf playing is to be selfish.

A player's rank and LP does not exactly equal their MMR but it will affect their rank and LP. The reason a player is receiving lower gains and higher losses is because their MMR is much lower than their rank.

MMR goes up when you win and it goes down when you lose. The amount by which it increases or decreases is pretty close to constant. You don't start gaining extra MMR per win when on a huge winstreak, or losing extra MMR when on a huge loss streak. This means that once your visual rank matches your MMR you'll be getting +-15 LP pretty much forever.
