23 paź 2023 · Culture encompasses many aspects of human life, such as shared beliefs, values, customs, and behaviors. Cultures often vary by region or location, and they can change and evolve over time.
Culture is manifested at different layers of depth. In analyzing the culture of a particular group or organization it is desirable to distinguish three fundamental levels at which culture manifests itself: (a) observable artifacts, (b) values, and (c) basic underlying assumptions.
• Culture is “a basic pattern of assumptions. . . that has worked well enough to be considered valid, therefore, to be taught to new members as the correct way to perceive, think, and feel in relation to these problems” (Schein, 1992, p. 9). • “Culture is a system of shared symbols” (Geertz, 1973).
Definitions of culture abound and range from very complex to very simple. For example, a complex definition was proposed by Kroeber and Parsons (1958): “transmit-ted and created content and patterns of values, ideas, and other symbolic- meaningful systems as factors in the shaping of human behavior” (p. 583).
