Whether you're talking about guitar or some other instrument, you can determine which chords go together by looking at chords within keys and scales. For example, let's say you want to know which chords go with a G chord.
Each scale can be turned into a series of chords that are characteristic of that scale tonality. Most common is major harmonized into: I ii iii IV V vi vii°. Lower case is minor, capital is major. The circle is diminshed. Most chords from this comprise 90% of chords you will see.
