There are two main types of acidosis, defined by their underlying cause, as follows: Excess acid production or kidney failure causes metabolic acidosis. Lung dysfunction or disease causes respiratory acidosis.
CAUSES OF ACID-BASE DISORDERS. Acid-base disorders are classified according to whether there is acidosis or alkalosis present (see pH section for details), and whether the primary problem is metabolic or respiratory (Figure 2).
Acid-base disorders are pathologic changes in carbon dioxide partial pressure (P co 2) or serum bicarbonate (HCO 3 −) that typically produce abnormal arterial pH values. Acidemia is serum pH < 7.35. Alkalemia is serum pH > 7.45. Acidosis refers to physiologic processes that cause acid accumulation or alkali loss.
Role of the kidneys. The kidneys are able to affect blood pH by excreting excess acids or bases.
