I don't know the details of why/how it happens, but I have had several instances of crossed calls on my cellphone. My gf and I are on different carries (I think its the source of the problem), and on occasion, when I answer a call from her I get a completely random person talking on the other line.

It is entirely possible that signals got crossed as has already been suggested, not the first time I have seen this with telephone networks. Also, with the telephone network, calls and sms, nothing is private or secure. Never have private conversations over the phone, they can be intercepted by any random person with half an imagination.
