According to the wiki entry the family inherits their ventriloquist great-uncle's prop trunk and finds a somehow-alive dummy that had been locked in it for 50 years. Between OP's episode and that summary, I've had quite enough nightmare fuel and don't feel I need to watch the pilot episode.
