Western Pygmy Rattlesnake <i>Sistrurus miliarius streckeri</i> is one of our most beautiful and rare Kentucky snakes. They are shy and retreating, and strongly nocturnal with the majority of surface activity during late summer and early fall.
Native to the southeastern United States, the Western Pygmy Rattlesnake is the smallest of the rattlesnakess, averaging about 12 to 24 inches in length. Despite its size, it exhibits the characteristic rattle of its larger relatives, providing an audible warning to potential threats.
Western pygmy rattlesnakes are grey, light pink, or light red in pattern color. Their black dorsal spots appear more stretched than the spots on the other two subspecies, and are bar-like in appearance.
The western pygmy rattlesnake is small and colorful, with a slender tail and tiny rattle. Its vibrating rattle is a faint buzz that sounds like a grasshopper. In Missouri, it occurs in the eastern Ozarks and in some counties bordering Arkansas.
