17 paź 2024 · Designated a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System in 2017, the Tank Cascade System (TCS) is an ancient, man-made water management system unique to Sri Lanka’s dry zone. This book provides a comprehensive understanding of the TCS and the broader landscape (i.e., cascade landscape) it occupies. Further, the book highlights research and fieldwork conducted under the GEF-funded ...

Sri Lanka’s tank cascades (a network of small tanks that store surface water) are one of the country’s greatest legacies from a remarkable hydraulic civilization, built by its ancient kings as a solution to the water scarcity in the country’s dry zone, over 2,000 years ago.
This country, at the core of the south east monsoon, has 80% of its territory covered by a dry zone prone to water scarcity. Its ancient kings built a sophisticated network of small tanks connected by canals to large reservoirs to collect and redistribute every single drop of rain the land received.
The online Water Information System for Sri Lanka provides maps and data on water availability, quality and use. An important tool on the site is an environmental flow calculator, which assesses how much river water flow is needed to maintain and bolster the health of aquatic ecosystems.
