We investigated the ecological status of four large river basins using physico-chemical water quality parameters and bioindicators by collecting samples from forest, agriculture, and urban landscapes of the Nile, Omo-Gibe, Tekeze, and Awash River basins in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia has abundant water resources and contains the headwaters of numerous transboundary rivers, including the Nile. Key water stress metrics suggest Ethiopia is water stressed.
Pollution of water bodies from technological activities such as industrial effluents and agricultural chemicals is considered a minor threat in developing countries like Ethiopia, though urban water pollution is growing at alarmingly faster rates (Abera et al. 2005).
The status of pollution in lakes and rivers of Ethiopia is overviewed via the level of contamination in different water bodies of Ethiopia following physical, chemical, and biological contamination by different pollutants was reviewed.
I. INTRODUCTION Ethiopia has gifted naturally big water resources that can effortlessly satisfy domestic requirements, irrigation, and hydropower, and with main rivers. A significant quantitative potential of water is named ‘white oil’ or ‘blue oil’ [1].
It includes water allocation, assessment and protection from pollution, natural and man-made infrastructure, and groundwater discharge to maintain, distribute and store water-related ecosystems and water quality.
