It is because water is essential to life, as we understand it; even minute traces of it on another planet can indicate that life could or did exist on that planet. Water is one of the more abundant molecules in living cells and the one most critical to life as we know it.
Describe the properties of water that are critical to maintaining life; Explain why water is an excellent solvent; Provide examples of water’s cohesive and adhesive properties; Discuss the role of acids, bases, and buffers in homeostasis
Water, like carbon, has a special role in living things. It is needed by all known forms of life. Water is a simple molecule, containing just three atoms. Nonetheless, water’s structure gives it unique properties that help explain why it is vital to all living organisms.

Concept 3.2 Four emergent properties of water contribute to Earth’s suitability for life 1. Cohesion of Water Molecules Water molecules stay close together as a result of hydrogen bonding. There are multiple hydrogen bonds in water. The hydrogen bonds hold water together, this is called cohesion. Cohesion of water contributes to the
1 mar 2001 · Living organisms primarily consist of water, which performs numerous functions, challenging the notion of it being merely an inactive diluent [1] [2][3]. When water is of inadequate quality, it...
