Both insects are easily identified by their beetle-like shape, and elongated pairs of hind legs that are feathered and resemble an oar. These legs are what propel them through the water.
Backswimmers feature white to tan backs marbled with darker almost wine glass shaped markings and olive to dark olive ventral surfaces, opposite to the smaller water boatman which feature dark backs and light bellies.
