Of course, once Levi accepts the call to follow Jesus, he is known as only Matthew, meaning “Yahweh’s gift.” For this reason, most believe Matthew was Levi’s Christian name.
So, we can identify Levi from two facts, that his father was called Alphaeus and that he was a tax collector (publican). As in Mark 2:14, Luke 5:27 also says Levi rose and followed Jesus, but he is never again mentioned in either gospel.
Matthew was one of the original twelve apostles of Jesus. He was also known by the name Levi. What made him unique from the other Apostles was his economic status and his career as a tax collector for the Romans. As a tax collector he was very unlikely to get any attention from a Jewish Rabbi.
