After facing Anduin, and after having a moment of self clarity and will power, Anduin became free of the domination, and thus Arthas' final soul remnant was released from the blade, bringing Shalamayne back to normal in the process.
It says in Warcraft 3 that after defeating Malganis Arthas wandered the wastes of Northrend alone driven by the voice of Frostmourne. It is assumed that he died and was transformed into a death knight during this time.
Escape from Arthas is the final boss encounter in Halls of Reflection, and thus of the Frozen Halls, in Icecrown Citadel. Players must escape from the Lich King at the the Shadow Throne through the Hidden Passage in order to complete the encounter.
Arthas travels to Northrend, to Mal'Ganis' base of operations. There he meets up with his old friend Muradin Bronzebeard, who tells him about a powerful Runeblade named Frostmourne that his dwarves heard about. Arthas vows to help him find Frostmourne, which they find after killing the Guardian infront of the cave. Heres a bit of a quote:
