It says in Warcraft 3 that after defeating Malganis Arthas wandered the wastes of Northrend alone driven by the voice of Frostmourne. It is assumed that he died and was transformed into a death knight during this time.
He slays the demon, completing his quest, and finds that he has destroyed their only transportation, left himself stranded in the middle of icy hell, as well as holding a corrupted sword that whispers to him wherever he goes.

Arthas travels to Northrend, to Mal'Ganis' base of operations. There he meets up with his old friend Muradin Bronzebeard, who tells him about a powerful Runeblade named Frostmourne that his dwarves heard about.
