By the end of World War I, thanks to its government contract, Walther was the largest pistol manufacturer in Germany. This example is a scarce first variant of the Model 4 which comprised of around 5,000 of the total 250,000 pistols produced.
During World War I Walther was unable to produce enough pistols on their own so they licensed Immanuel Meffert of Suhl, a well known manufacturer of hunting and sporting guns with which Walther had a longstanding relationship, to make the Model 4 between December 1915 and March 1917.

Walther Model 4 7.65 mm self-loading pistol, 1915. This pistol was used by many German Army officers during the war. It used an eight-round magazine. The Walther, while underpowered when compared with the Mauser or Luger, was reliable and easy to maintain in the conditions of trench warfare.
