Waipiʻo (Hawaiian pronunciation: [vɐjˈpiʔo]) is a census-designated place (CDP) located on the island of Oʻahu in the City & County of Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. In Hawaiian, wai piʻo means "curved water". As of the 2020 census, the CDP had a population of 12,082. The U.S. ZIP Code for Waipiʻo is 96797.
Waipi‘o (or Waipio) Valley is named after the meandering Wailoa Stream that runs through the valley (wai-piʻo means curved water in the Hawaiian language) and is about one mile wide and six miles deep. Towards the back the valley splits into many ‘fingers’, each one with its own waterfall.
Located on the Hāmākua Coast, the sacred Waipiʻo Valley was the boyhood home of King Kamehameha I, and an important center for political and religious life in Hawaiʻi. Waipiʻo Valley is a valley located in the Hamakua District of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. "Waipiʻo" means "curved water" in the Hawaiian language. [1] The valley was the capital and permanent residence of many early Hawaiian Aliʻi (chiefs/kings) up until the time of King ʻUmi.
Its floor is carpeted with forests and neatly formed taro patches interspersed with the homes of its few residents. At the mouth of the valley, the ocean licks the mile long black sand beach which is sliced in half by the river that is partially fed by the 1,200 ft. free falling Hi'ilawe Falls which resides deep in the valley.
