18 sty 2018 · Construction History. The California State Capitol was modeled after the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. The iconic dome of that structure was added around the same time the California Capitol was built. The present Capitol building was constructed between 1860 and 1874.
History of the State Capitol Building Shortly after the end of Mexican rule, Californians began to clamor for statehood. In 1849, a constitutional convention met at Colton Hall in Monterey and proposed a constitution, subsequently ratified by the people, which named San Jose as the first capital.
Visitors can see many interior architectural features, including unique stained glass renditions of the California state seal, California’s state flower, portrayed in marble mosaic floors, and an awe-inspiring view of the interior dome from both the first and second floors.
Designed in a Renaissance Revival style, the California State Capitol is rich in architectural symbolism, based in large part on ancient Greek and Roman elements and motifs. The multi-columned portico with its pitched roof pediment represented the entrance into a Greek temple.
