In the 1936 March issue of QST, Yardley Beers, W3AWH, described an antenna designed by his friend, Mr. H. J. Siegel, W3EDP. The design was based on the end-fed zep antenna as once trailed from Zeppelin Airships.
I have tested the antenna from 6 m to 80 m with a coax length of 12 m H-155 and the IC-7400, the TS-590 and the TS-480SAT. The losses are negligible and the antenna is working quite well in the praxis. If you have matching problems you can change the length of the coax cable and try it again.
I decided to see if the W3EDP antenna could be optimized by adjusting the counterpoise lengths for each band. Figure-1 is a diagram of the original W3EDP antenna.
The W3EDP antenna is probably one of the simplest antenna designs around. The antenna is nothing more than a 25.9m end-fed wire tuned against a 5.18m counterpoise. The original configuration (Fig. 1) shows the antenna and counterpoise coupled via a link coil to the power amplifier (p.a.) tuned circuit.
Wire Lengths for Various Band Combinations. The graph below shows lengths to avoid for different collections of bands. The fewer bands, the fewer high impedance regions to avoid. You also want the antenna to be at least 1/4 wavelength long for each band you plan to use. For instance, to work 40m be sure the antenna is at least 10m or 33' long.
The rig and tuner (and all other radio equipment in the shack) need to be connected to a robust ground network. Known end‐fed antenna designs include the GRV antenna, the Windom antenna, the Zepp antenna in addition to a random length – as long as possible – of wire.
