The best option is to 1) move your account over to Google Apps using the guide, 2) go to system pref, accounts, add a gmail account using your vt email address and google apps password, then 3) drag emails from your old vt email to your new Google Apps account.
If you see the inbox and messages of another Google account that you own, follow Google's instructions at Sign in to multiple accounts at once under Add account using the entire Virginia Tech email address including @vt.edu.
Gmail and other Google Web applications are accessed through Virginia Tech's Login Service, enabling access with your Virginia Tech username (PID) and passphrase and using your Virginia Tech 2-factor authentication.
Many people use gmail as their mail client to access VT mail, but activating Google Apps for VT mail causes this to stop working. And, believe it or not, Google does not offer a Gmail to Google Apps migration tool. You have to use the IMAP capabilities of the Exchange server migration tool.
