I was looking for a new quiet fan last year and saw all the great reviews for vornado. I ordered one from Amazon and it was loud as hell. Bearings were messed up right out the box.
I've been looking into DC powered fans in particular, for the tremendous energy savings (the Vornado DC fans use nearly 90% less energy compared to the equivalent AC fan when set to medium).
Vornado hands down. I know they cost a bit more than your average fan but in my experience they last forever their warranty is outstanding and size for size they just seem to perform better.
