If you were thinking that somewhere out there was an inexpensive swap that could be done for $1000 to 1500 there isn't. The only way that happens is if you fall into a motor that actually runs - most cores don't.

To have a shop do a rebuild is 2500+. A type four motor found in buses 1971 and up in year could be 3500+. The type four motors are simply more expensive and less know how to work on them. You can go with a 4-speed adapter plate, the problem is that the trans is still geared for a stock Vanagon motor. Without regearing the stock 091 trans, Your engine will be turning around 3000 rpm at 55 mph. At 65-70 you are talking around 4000 rpm, this doesn't work for long.
