The subgroup analyses indicated that vitamin D severe deficiency was associated with a greater risk of dementia (by 48%) and AD (by 51%) compared to vitamin D moderate deficiency (by 20 and 36%, respectively), indicating that the risk of dementia and AD was reduced with increased vitamin D.
Several epidemiological studies have linked serum vitamin D with risk of dementia in general populations [4–7]. Although the mechanism has not been fully elucidated, it is widely postulated that vitamin D may reduce dementia risk by mitigating neuroinflammation and vascular damage [8–10].
