Jonestown’s dark and bloody end came on November 18, 1978, when Congressman Leo Ryan visited the commune to investigate claims of human rights abuses. His visit ended in violence, as Ryan and several members of his delegation were ambushed and killed by armed temple members at a nearby airstrip.
