VCM is a component in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resins. VCM is a halogenated hydrocarbon with acute toxic effects, as well as chronic carcinogenic effects.
Concentrations of vinyl chloride tested in vitro range from 0.275% (Shahin 1976) to 40% (du Pont 1992a). Shahin (1976) reported negative results for 0.275 and 0.55% vinyl chloride in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
Chronic-duration oral studies of vinyl chloride in animals focus primarily on carcinogenicity; however, two studies reported noncancer effects in the liver. As shown in Figures 1-1 and 1-2, the most sensitive effects appear to be liver damage and carcinogenicity, exacerbated immune response, and delayed fetal ossification.
