Conclusions: Cats appear to be uniquely sensitive to the toxic effects of valacyclovir, and even high doses appear not to suppress FHV-1 replication in acutely infected cats. Clinical relevance: Use of valacyclovir is of questionable value in cats with acute FHV-1 infection and, at high doses, the drug may be toxic.
Like any medication, valacyclovir can have potential side effects in cats. The most common side effect reported in cats is gastrointestinal upset, including vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite. In some cases, cats may also experience neurologic side effects such as disorientation or lethargy.
In cats and small dogs, it is difficult to decrease the dose because the smallest tablet manufactured cannot be accurately cut small enough. At doses of 3.75 mg/cat or higher, cats develop adverse effects associated with serotonin syndrome at higher rates.

The dosage in cats has varied from 5 mg/kg, PO, bid, to 5–10 mg/kg/day, PO. The recommended therapeutic range is 10–40 mg/mL; trough concentrations can be measured ~7–10 days after initiating treatment or altering the dosage.
