It was during the Battle of Tassafaronga on November 30, 1942, off Guadalcanal that the New Orleans sustained its heaviest damage. A Japanese Type 93 “Long Lance” torpedo detonated the forward magazines and destroyed 150 feet of hull.
Other evidence, to be discussed below, also indicates that the torpedo struck so far aft of the tanks that it was improbable that they incurred structural damage from the torpedo detonation. The tanks, between bulkheads 12 and 17-1/2, were some 40 to 45 feet forward of the probable point of impact.
