In 1983, John F. Kennedy was sent off the coast of Lebanon after the Beirut troop barracks were attacked. In 1984, she underwent another renovation. Returning in 1986, the ship was deployed to the Mediterranean again to patrol against Libya.
In July 2004, USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) collided with a dhow in the Persian Gulf, resulting in the tragic loss of all individuals on the traditional Arab sailing boat. Following the incident, the Navy relieved the commander of the Kennedy, Capt. Stephen B. Squires.
