15 kwi 2014 · Metformin is an effective ovulation induction agent for non-obese women with PCOS and offers some advantages over other first line treatments for anovulatory infertility such as clomiphene. For clomiphene-resistant women, metformin alone or in combination with clomiphene is an effective next step.
Metformin was the first insulin sensitising drug (ISD) to be used in PCOS to investigate the role of insulin resistance in the pathogenesis of the syndrome [Velazquez et al. 1994].

Significantly more women with PCOS by updated guidelines should be taking metformin than women with PCOS by previous guidelines. Using the old guidelines 12% of patients should be taking metformin which increased to 91% using the new guidelines (p<0.0001).
There have been several studies looking at the use of Metformin in women with PCOS and the majority have shown that Metformin can make periods more regular and improve fertility in women with PCOS. The use of Metformin may also make weight loss easier.
