Since last year’s AEO, much has changed, most notably the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Public Law 117-169, which altered the policy landscape we use to develop our projections.

16 mar 2023 · We have documented our modeling assumptions related to all IRA provisions, which are available with today’s AEO2023 release. We will refine our estimates over time as IRA implementation details become available and we update our modeling capability.
Assumptions. Current laws and regulations as of November 2021. Current views on economic and demographic trends, and technology improvements. Compound annual growth rate for real U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) is 2.2% (Reference case) High Economic Growth case (2.7%) and Low Economic Growth case (1.8%)
The AEO2020 Reference case represents EIA’s best assessment of how U.S. and world energy markets will operate through 2050, based on key assumptions intended to provide a base for exploring long-term trends.
World Energy Outlook 2023 Free Dataset. Includes world aggregated data for all three modelled scenarios (STEPS, APS, NZE) and selected data for key regions and countries for 2030, 2035, 2040 and 2050, as well as historical data (2010, 2021, 2022). Last updated. March 2024.
In general, the AEO’s reference case assumes (1) no changes in current U.S. laws and regulations, and (2) the continuation of historic industry and technology trends. The AEO attempts to reflect all federal laws and regulations and most key state laws and regulations that affect the energy sector.
