We construct 1-year mortality rates (per 1000 live births) for infant mortality (death under 1 year), neonatal mortality (death under 28 days), and postneonatal mortality (death between 28 and 364 days) at the county-year level, corresponding to the years 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2016.
25 lip 2024 · The U.S. infant mortality rate was 5.61 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, a 3% increase from the rate of 5.44 in 2021. The neonatal mortality rate increased 3% from 3.49 in 2021 to 3.59 in 2022, and the postneonatal mortality rate increased 4% from 1.95 to 2.02.
Results—In 2023, the U.S. provisional infant mortality rate was 5.61 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, unchanged from the rate in 2022. From 2022 to 2023, changes in the neonatal mortality rate (from 3.59 to 3.65) and the postneonatal mortality rate (from 2.02 to 1.96) were not statistically significant.
