Homicide rates are highest in counties home to large cities, where there are an average of 10.5 per 100,000. Rates are lower in medium-sized urban counties (7.4), small metropolitan counties (6.4), and suburban counties [2] (5.1).
The following table of United States cities by crime rate is based on Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) statistics from 2019 for the 100 most populous cities in America that have reported data to the FBI UCR system.
Looking at violent offenses, the number of homicides in the 29 study cities providing data for that crime was 13% lower–319 fewer homicides–during the first half of 2024 than in the first half of 2023. There were 7% fewer reported aggravated assaults and 18% fewer gun assaults in the first half of 2024 than during the same period in 2023.
The number of homicides in the 32 study cities providing homicide data was 10% lower—representing 515 fewer homicides—in 2023 than in 2022. Looking at other violent offenses, there were 3% fewer reported aggravated assaults in 2023 than in 2022 and 7% fewer gun assaults in 11 reporting cities.
