The United States Army has twenty nine grades of enlisted soldiers and officers, with most soldiers enlisting at the entry-level rank of Private (PVT, paygrade E-1). The highest rank achievable in the Army is General of the Army.
The thirteen enlisted ranks in the Army range from the entry level DoD paygrade E-1, Private, to paygrade E-9, Sergeant Major of the Army. Enlisted soldiers are eligible for automatic pay raises on a yearly or biyearly basis, depending on their current Army paygrade.
